@Simon - Mesh Mishap

I can't unfold the mesh. :(

I've done everything in the video but for some reason this won't work.

The error at the bottom says: "Mesh has non-manifold edges. Clean up the mesh before using unfold." and I don't understand what it means.

The drawing was done in Photoshop with each part of the animation on different layers, it was then taken into After Effects to make each one of the layers move on their own.

What if Metropolis - Thumbnail sketches 91 - 94

With these thumbnails I was trying to put together the different elements of my final design. Numbers 91 to 93 was just me trying to work out in what way I should show my city and how the hot air balloons should relate to the buildings.

91 had the city off to the side alittle and the hot air balloons where showen to be quite large conpared to the buildings.

I had throught of using a bird's eye view of the city as show in number 92. After doing this sketch however I felt that it wouldn't really work when showing the geomerty of the buildings. It did, however, help me work out how I might arranging the different buildings.

93 was more or less was I was aiming for as I had the buildings evenly sprend out and the balloons where not dwarfing them. I then moved this idea over to sketch 94 where I put it agesnt the backdrop that I wanted to use for my matte painting.

Film Review - La Belle et la Bete

Jean Cocteau’s 1946 version of this classic tale can be said to the blueprint of the many adaptations that were to come, including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991), inspiring the way in which the magical elements of the story are portrayed. Showing enough smoke and mirrors to let the audient’s imagination add in their own thoughts and ideas.

At the start of the film a message from Cocteau appears talking about how children see the world and how they easily believe in the things that are about to happen are real, to which he asks the viewer “…a little of this childlike simplicity…” (Cocteau, 1946). This might be an odd thing to ask at the start of a film but Cocteau does this for a reason as Derek Malcom examples “The result was a film that dared to be naive, asking its audience to revert to childhood, the better to accept its practical magic.” (Malcolm,1999). There could also be the possibility that the film was designed to be a form of escapism and to remind the viewer of their innocence that they may have lost because of the Second World War which had just ended at the time of the film’s release.

To help capture the enchanting feel of the Beast’s castle Cocteau turned to fashion illustrator and design Christian Bérard to create the film’s concept art as well the outfits worn by the characters. Berarad’s images seemed to work perfectly with the black and white film showing only what was important while leaving the rest in darkness adding to the mystery that is the Beast’s home. Even the outfits help to add convey the magic of the film throw the black and white screen with the sweeping dresses to the small sparkling gem details.

All together Cocteau’s film helped to set in stone some of the starting points that would not only make it one of the most successful surreal styled movies of its time but it also “brought the avant garde into the highly commercial French cinema, inspiring a young generation of critics” (Miller, s.d.) making you think if there real is some kind of magic spell at work.

Animation - Lesson 6 and 7

Learning about walk and running cycles.

So that it was easier to tell the limbs apart I coloured the character's left limbs red and their right limb blue.

Walk cycle


After creating the base walk animation I had to edit it so that it looked like a proper walk cycle. First I had to move the different frames so that the character's foot matched up and didn't look like they were sliding across the floor. After that I copied the animation and switched the colours round, so that they would match up to the same limb, along with making sure that the frames matched up for the next step.

Just like I had done before with the walking animation I moved the frames together so that the character didn't look like they were flying across the screen along with changing the limb colours and making sure that the copied frames matched up for the next step.

To make it easier to see how the frames of the running animation work I put them on top of each other so that the character looks like they are running on the spot.

Animation - Lesson 5

This was meant to be up for Halloween but for some reason when I save the animation as a GIF it would only show the moon. I later found out that it might have something to do with the canvas size I was useing so I changed it to match the broaders of the background and now it shows all of the animation.
