Life Drawing - Day 2

First drawing
The first drawing that I did was more or less where I left off form last week, freely drawing out the model's body before shading in to make the the drawing seem less flat on the page.

Second drawing
The second and third set of drawings where also like last week's work but this time I focused more on the light and shadows on the model and tried to just draw them to show the model's shape. I found that this was easier to do when I was using the charcoal as I was able to blend it to show the fainter shadows and add depth the darker areas.

Fourth drawing
The fourth set of drawings was basically a warm down after all the quick sketches that we had did through out the day, it also gave everyone a chance to practices drawing parts of the body that we personally felt we needed to improve on. For me it was the hands and feet and I did feel that I was improving the more I focused but noted that even though the model was facing straight on to me I was drawing them at an angle.

Illustrator tutorial - The basic outline

When designing different parts for an animation making some of the ideas clearer than others, this helps to plan out some of the finale ideas that could be used for the props, sets and characters. 

To get an understanding of this we were set with designing our own background characters that could be used in PIXAR's Monsters University and so that we didn't just design something straight out of our heads we were given prompts to what each of our characters should include. Mine were:

Artist/ Beatnik
1 Leg
4 Arms
5 Eyes

After sketching out some ideas, using these rules, for the character I finely came up with the final design that I was happy with to put into Illustrator.

I have never used Illustrator before and just trying to understand the basics of using the pen tool took sometime but after a while I got the hang of using the Alt-key to create sharp turns and the holding down the left mouse button to make a bend.

After I had finished picking out all the outlines I started to play around with the style of the lines to take away the cartoon looking thick black outline and to make the character look as if they had been inked out using a real pen.

Maya tutorial - Very first models

Learning about how to create models in Maya was a lot easier than I first thought.

There are two different ways in which you can create a model in Maya depending on what you feel works best for you. One thing that you have to remember when doing this is to have Maya set to Modeling up in the top left hand corner as this will change the drop down menus at the top.

First models creating using the CV curve tool

The first way involves using CV curve tool with can be found by going to the Create drop down menu and then clicking on Curve Tools. The best way in which to do this is by looking at the side view or the X - axis as you will be drawing out what looks like a cut through section of the model, the curve doesn't have to join up at the ends just make sure that it ends on the Y- axis. After drawing out the edge of the shape all that is needed to do is to make the line a soild model and the way to do this by going to Surfaces and then clicking on Revolve.

The other way in which you can model in Maya is by moving and adding the Edges, horizontal and vertical lines that go round the model. The best way in which to start this type of modeling off is to use one of the Primitives, simple shapes that are built in to Maya. For this model I was using the cylinder.

To this you need to go to the Edit Mesh drop down menu and click on Insert Edge Loop Tool before clicking on where you want it to go on the model.

You can edit the Vertices of the model by clicking and holding down the right mouse button and draging over to where the pop up menu says Vertex. This will let you highlight one or group of the them so that you can make more precise adjustments such as widening and shrinking.

To get an understanding of what the model would look like without looking all blocky just have to press the 3 key on the keybroad.

Contextual Studies - Lesson One

The talk we had about contextual studies helped me to think about the feel that I wanted to convey to the audience about my city design. Thinking in deph about it will help me fine tune my designs along with making the final designs more believable, these include thinking about:

  • Should it be a Utopia or should it be a dystopia? 
  • Is the city inhabited by one type of social class and if so who? Do different classes live in the same city and if so do they mix or are they separated?
  • Is the city old or new and does this show with how the buildings are laid out?
  • How do the inhabitants move round the city?

This was something that has crossed my mind when I was reading the text and trying to think about each of the cities. The best way that I get round this was to go thought the text and try and pick out any clues that are given about the materials that are used for the city or the way that the people behave their.

Photoshop tutorial - First attempt

I have used Photoshop in the past and have done some digital drawing before, however putting the two together seemed to be quite a challenge for me.


My black and white image remains unfinished as I was struggling getting used to the way the different bushes worked and I didn't want to mess up what I was already happy with.


I'm more happy with the way my colour drawing came out as I was starting to understand the way Photoshop works and how I could use the bushes in ways so that I felt comfortable with it. I was able to finish this drawing as I found it easier to pick up the different colours in the image and work out how much of each colour I needed to use for each part.

Life Drawing - Day 1

Life drawing is something that I have done before so I saw today as an exercise in getting back into looking at how the human body is shaped depending on the pose.
First drawing
The first drawing that I did showed just how out of practice I was when it comes to scaling up the different body parts. In the second drawing I was alot freer with how I put my marks on the paper, I also fleet that I was able to work better in charcoal as I able to put the marks down faster while picking up on the different bumps and curves.
Second drawing
Doing the single line drawings did make me follow the whole of the model's body and understand the ways that I can move the pencil on the paper and that the drawing doesn't have to look realistic.
Third drawing
By the third drawing I was starting the get back into the flow of drawing and picking out the simplest ways in which to express the depth of the body.
